DEEP BACKGROUND 08 OF 13 . INDIFFERENTS How many times can you show someone the same thing before it stops working? Fewer than most media plans assume. Repeated exposure does produce liking, but pooled across 208 experiments the effect falls from r = .365 under ten exposures to r = .069 above a hundred. Familiarity has a ceiling. WHY THIS IS WORTH MONEY At the disengaged end of any audience, persuasion is not available. People are not searching, not weighing, not listening to an argument. They meet things in the ordinary course of a day. Which points at availability rather than argument, and that is the right instinct. What almost nobody checks is the dose, and the dose is where the money goes. WHAT THE RECORD SHOWS The original finding, and it is robust Zajonc (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1968) put it as plainly as it can be put: "The hypothesis is offered that mere repeated exposure of the individual to a stimulus object enhances his attitude toward it." He showed people nonsense words, Chinese-like characters and photographs of faces, at frequencies of nought, one, two, five, ten and twenty five. Liking rose with frequency in all three, each at p < .001. He also found it in language itself. Word frequency against rated favourability correlated at .89, .85, .84, .81, .85 and .89 for countries, cities, trees, fruits, vegetables and flowers. No argument, no persuasion, no new information. Familiarity alone did the work. And then the part almost nobody quotes Bornstein (Psychological Bulletin, 1989) meta-analysed twenty years of the literature, 208 independent experiments from 134 articles. Overall effect r = .260. Then the table that should be on the wall of every media planning meeting. Maximum exposures against effect size: one to nine, r = .365. Ten to nineteen, .340. Twenty to twenty nine, .264. Thirty to ninety nine, .214. A hundred or more, r = .069. His conclusion on why: "The findings that brief exposure durations, a limited number of exposures, and heterogeneous stimulus presentations enhance the exposure effect suggest that boredom is a limiting factor in the exposure-affect relationship." Duration points the same way. Under one second, r = .407. One to six seconds, .162. Six to ten seconds, .065. And it can go below where it started Bornstein, Kale and Cornell (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 1990) tested boredom directly across three experiments with a hundred students each, at frequencies up to fifty. Two findings. Boredom-prone people showed no exposure effect at all. And when a simple stimulus was rated alongside a more interesting one, liking for the simple one declined significantly with repetition and finished significantly below baseline after fifty exposures. The second condition is close to the real situation. Your thing is never seen on its own. It is seen next to something more interesting. THE STRONGEST OBJECTION, AND THE ANSWER TO IT Campbell and Keller (Journal of Consumer Research, 2003) is the one that goes at this page hardest, because it attacks the part we care about most. Across two experiments using television and internet advertising they found that "repetition of advertising attributed to an unfamiliar brand showed decreased effectiveness; when the same advertising was attributed to a known, familiar brand, repetition wearout was postponed." And the decline came partly through "negative thoughts about tactic inappropriateness." Read that against the availability play and it stings. The claim is that being present works at the disengaged end. Campbell and Keller find repetition wears out fastest exactly where the brand is least known, and that it wears out through people actively thinking worse of the tactic. Two honest responses, and neither of them rescues the naive version. The first is that this changes the instruction rather than removing it. Availability still beats argument at this end, because there is no argument being heard. But availability is not repetition of one execution. It is presence across many ordinary moments, which is the heterogeneous condition Bornstein found strongest and the opposite of a heavy frequency buy on one asset. The second is a concession. An unfamiliar brand does not get to buy its way in by frequency alone, and anybody selling that should stop. The dose that works is small, varied, and spread across contexts. One more, for completeness. Rethans, Swasy and Marks (Journal of Marketing Research, 1986) tested the classic inverted-U of repetition and attitude in television advertising and reported that their "findings do not support the hypothesized inverted-U relationship." The shape of the decline is not settled either. WHERE THE EVIDENCE STOPS Zajonc's maximum is twenty five exposures of novel, meaningless stimuli in a laboratory. Nothing in the 1968 monograph is about brands, media or a real week. The Bornstein meta-analysis was read from a non-publisher copy. The figures were internally consistent and are quoted as read, and anybody putting them on a client page should check them against the published version first. We could find no study testing exposure effects by audience engagement level. The move from mere exposure to a disengaged position on the spectrum is our inference, not a measured result. It is on the page as an inference. There is no published figure for how many exposures is too many in a real media schedule. Anyone offering you one is guessing. WHERE THE CONE SITS Indifferents are not ignoring you on purpose. They are not searching, and the domain is not where their attention lives. It lives at the top of a Cone you are not looking at. Two ways to lose money here. Treating them as a persuasion problem and spending to make them care, when caring is not available. Or writing them off, when they are the largest position in almost every Cone. The play is to become unavoidable, then easy. And when they arrive, expect no thoughtful opinion and no feedback. They hardly noticed. That is what the position is. What the exposure literature adds is a limit on the method. Be present in many ordinary moments rather than loud in one, and stop before boredom does the work in reverse. WHAT TO DO ON MONDAY Stop writing persuasion for this end. Instead, audit how many ordinary moments in a week your thing could plausibly turn up in without asking anybody to think about it. Then go and be in three more of them, rather than three times more often in the one you already have.
